What is diabetes?
Diabetes is the term used to describe two separate diseases with similar effects on the body. In both cases, there's too much sugar in the bloodstream that keeps the body from unlocking food's energy potential.
In both cases, regulating the body's blood sugar is paramount for better health. However, what causes the two types of diabetes are very different.
Type 1 diabetes
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder. The pancreas begins producing insulin along with a specific protein that triggers the body's immune response. As a result, the immune system attacks the beta cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. Eventually, the pancreas will stop producing insulin altogether leaving you to inject insulin into the bloodstream to counterbalance the carbohydrates you eat.
Type 2 diabetes
Type 2 diabetes affects more than 29.1 million people in the US. When the pancreas can't keep up with the demand for insulin or when the body ineffectively absorbs carbohydrates, that's when this endocrine disorder occurs. You can develop Type II diabetes at any age, but it most often affects people who are middle-aged or older.
What are the traditional treatments for diabetes?
Treatment for diabetes largely depends on the type of diabetes a person has.
Someone with Type I diabetes must routinely test their blood sugar and administer insulin via injection or insulin pump. Someone with Type II diabetes can often manage their condition by checking their blood sugar regularly, eating a healthy diet, exercising and maintaining a healthy weight.
Often, those with Type II diabetes rely on medication to help them maintain a healthy blood sugar level.
How can functional medicine help diabetes?
The goal of functional medicine is to help the body perform at an optimal level. Dr. Shaw does this in three ways.
- Eliminates obstructions to the body’s nervous system through chiropractic adjustment so your body can communicate its needs to your organs, and the organs can respond appropriately.
- Examining your diet for nutritional deficiencies that may be causing additional stress to your body.
- Help you eliminate toxins and stress from your life that may be contributing to your condition.
